This year for Valentine's Day, LEGO treats us to a cute Valentine's Day gift box complete with little red hearts inside.

Each year LEGO produces a few sets for certain holidays. Some days get more sets made for them than others. Christmas usually gets the most followed by Easter and Halloween. But Valentine’s Day is one holiday that usually manages to get at least one set.

As gifts go, this year’s is a creative one. It is something that a child can give their mother or someone can give their LEGO sweetheart. For 2012, LEGO has created the Valentine’s Day Box.

What is the Valentine’s Day Box?

At a glance this box looks like an odd shaped present topped with a heart. In many ways that is exactly what it is. Of course this does not sound completely romantic. Therefore you may want to compare it to the fancy hinge boxes.

The hinge box is that delicate box that typically features a figure or object. Once you open it, it’s filled with little mementos that reflect the image of the box. For example, a box of a penguin may have small baby penguins inside of it. Or perhaps, a box of a dog may have little bones inside of it.

In this case, the LEGO box is a red box with a white ribbon and a heart sculpture on top. Inside the box are small flat hearts. The best way to describe it is a keep-sake box that represents your love to the person you’re giving it to.

Building Valentine’s Day Box, a LEGO Holiday Set

The construction of the box is based on two six-by-six red plates. They work as the base of the box and the lid. This provides a very sturdy design to keep the box together. The box itself only stands a little over two bricks tall which means it has a very low center of gravity. Again, this makes the box highly durable.

Then modified plates are used to look like ribbon. These bracket plates actually add a degree of support when putting the lid onto the box since they stick out lower than the lid. This works like an inverted cradle which helps keep the lid in place.

Even the small hearts placed in the box are meant to stand up to rough handling. They’re just two modified plates pressed together so they don’t offer much to break apart.

When it comes down to it, there is only one weak point. The heart built on top of the box. It is brick built and stands out from the box. It makes a tempting handle for those trying to open the box, but it is in fact the worst place to grab it. Instead, show your loved one to use the white ribbon sections. They can split apart easily and they don’t upset any portion of the model.

Interesting Parts in Valentine’s Day Box, a LEGO Holiday Set

There is nothing special in the set to get for parts. Of course, if you are looking for a selection of red and white pieces, this may help. The only part that may prove tricky to find in your own collection is a one-by-four modified plate. It only has studs on the end leaving the middle as smooth as a tile. It is not rare, it just happens to be a piece that has not been made as long as others in the set.

List of LEGO Holiday Sets for 2012

The following list is organized by set number. This list should only be considered complete when the year has ended. LEGO gives little to no announcement for when they plan to release a Holiday set so this list will be updated periodically throughout its calendar year.
